Why Contractors Can’t Rely on Personal Auto Insurance
Every day, contractors across the country drive to job sites in trucks registered under personal auto policies — and every day, those same contractors are one accident away from a coverage denial that could bankrupt their business.
Personal auto policies are written with a specific exclusion for regular commercial use. The moment your vehicle becomes a tool of your trade — hauling materials, transporting equipment, driving between job sites — your personal carrier has grounds to deny a claim. They don’t have to tell you upfront. You find out when you need them most.
Commercial auto insurance for contractors is purpose-built for your reality. It covers the vehicles your business depends on, the drivers you employ, and the situations personal policies exclude. Whether you run one truck or a fleet of twenty, the right commercial auto policy keeps your operation protected and compliant.
At Trade Safe Insurance, we work exclusively with contractors. We know which carriers write the best commercial auto policies for your trade, what limits your clients will require on certificates, and how to structure coverage that actually protects you — not just satisfies a checkbox.
WHAT WE COVER
Commercial Auto Coverage Built for Your Trade
Liability Coverage
Bodily injury and property damage if your vehicle causes an accident. Required by law and by most general contractors for subcontractor approval.
Physical Damage
Collision and comprehensive coverage protects your vehicles whether you’re on the road, at a job site, or parked overnight.
Hired & Non-Owned
Covers liability when employees use personal vehicles or you rent vehicles for business — a critical gap most contractors overlook.
DOT & Fleet
Compliance coverage for vehicles over 10,001 lbs GVWR, dump trucks, and fleets of 5 or more vehicles with multi-unit discounts.

QUICK ANSWERS
Common Questions About Contractor Commercial Auto
Do I need commercial auto if I only use my truck occasionally for work?
If you use your vehicle for any regular business purpose — even occasionally — your personal auto policy likely excludes that use. “Occasional” doesn’t protect you; the exclusion is triggered by the nature of use, not the frequency. Talk to an agent about what your specific policy says.
Are tools in my truck covered under commercial auto?
No. Commercial auto covers the vehicle itself — not what’s inside it. Tools, equipment, and materials require a separate inland marine or tools & equipment policy. This is one of the most common coverage gaps we see with contractors.
Does commercial auto cover my employees when they drive company trucks?
Yes, as long as employees are listed or covered under your policy’s driver schedule. You’ll want to make sure all regular drivers are disclosed to your carrier — unlisted drivers can complicate claims.
What limits do general contractors typically require?
Most GC prequalification requirements call for $1,000,000 combined single limit (CSL) on commercial auto liability. Some larger projects or public contracts require $2,000,000. We always recommend buying the limits your clients need, not just the state minimums.
Can I get commercial auto if I have prior accidents or violations?
Yes. As an independent agency, we have access to carriers that specialize in higher-risk commercial auto placements. Prior accidents and violations affect your rate, but they don’t disqualify you. Contact us for a no-obligation quote.
