Why Work Trucks Need Commercial Auto Coverage
The pickup truck is the most essential piece of equipment for most contractors. It hauls materials, tows trailers, carries tools, transports crews, and logs more job-site miles in a week than a commuter puts on in a month. And yet, thousands of contractors insure their work trucks on personal auto policies that explicitly exclude the way they’re being used.
The distinction seems subtle but the consequences are significant. A personal auto policy is written for a vehicle that commutes to work and runs occasional errands. A commercial auto policy is written for a vehicle that IS the work. The underwriting is different, the exclusions are different, and when it comes to a serious accident, the outcome can be completely different.
If you have your company name on your truck, use it to haul materials to job sites, carry employees, or tow a trailer for work — you need commercial auto. Not because the law requires it (though some states and contract requirements will), but because the personal policy you have won’t protect you when it counts.
Commercial auto for a standard contractor pickup typically costs $150–$300 per month depending on your driving record, the vehicle’s value, and the coverage limits you carry. It’s real money — but it’s a fraction of what one uncovered accident lawsuit can cost you.
One important note: commercial auto covers the truck. It does not cover tools, equipment, or materials stored inside it. For that, you need a separate tools and equipment or inland marine policy.
What to Look for in a Contractor Pickup Truck Policy
Key coverage considerations for the truck that runs your business.
Liability Limits
Carry at least $1M CSL to meet most GC subcontractor requirements. State minimums are far too low for commercial operations.
Physical Damage
Collision and comprehensive on a work truck makes sense until the truck’s value drops below the cost of carrying it. Don’t drop it prematurely.
HNOA Endorsement
Add hired and non-owned auto to cover the gap when employees run errands in personal vehicles.
Towing Coverage
If you regularly tow a trailer, confirm coverage extends to attached trailers and consider listing the trailer separately.
