Tools & Equipment Insurance
Does the GC’s Policy Cover Subcontractor Tools?
No — the GC’s policy covers the GC’s property and liability. Each subcontractor is responsible for insuring their own tools and equipment.

Are subcontractor tools covered under the general contractor’s insurance?
This is a common assumption that leads to uncovered losses. The general contractor’s insurance protects the GC — their liability, their property, and sometimes the project under builders risk. It does not extend to subcontractor-owned tools and equipment.
Each subcontractor should carry their own tools and equipment policy. If your tools are stolen from a GC’s job site, you file with your own tools insurer — not the GC’s.
Some GC contracts require subs to carry specific coverage minimums, including tools policies. Review your subcontractor agreements carefully and ensure your coverage meets any stated requirements.
