Mid-Term Policy Changes

Can I Add an Additional Insured Mid-Policy?

Yes. Adding an additional insured to your general liability policy mid-term is one of the most common contractor endorsement requests, and at Trade Safe we typically issue the updated certificate within the same business day.

Adding an Additional Insured Mid-Policy: The Direct Answer

Adding an additional insured (AI) to your general liability policy mid-term is routine. Almost every active contractor adds, removes, or adjusts additional insureds dozens of times a year as new jobs and new GCs come online. Your carrier does not cancel and re-write the policy — it issues an endorsement that attaches to your existing policy, and a new certificate of insurance (COI) is generated showing the updated party. The mechanics are simple: you give your agent the legal name of the entity to add (homeowner, GC, property owner, lender, municipality), the project address if scheduled, and any specific endorsement form the contract requires (typical examples include CG 20 10, CG 20 37, or a blanket AI form). Your agent submits the request to the carrier and most carriers process AI endorsements within minutes to a few hours. Trade Safe routinely issues same-day COIs once the carrier acknowledges the change.

There are three flavors of additional insured to be aware of. Scheduled AI names a specific party on a specific job — cleanest, but you have to ask for one every time. Blanket AI by written contract automatically extends additional insured status to any party you have agreed in writing to add — cheaper and faster, but only if the contract is signed before the loss. Blanket AI — ongoing and completed operations is the gold standard, because it extends the protection past the day you finish the work and is what major GCs almost always require.

There is no premium charge for most mid-term AI endorsements on a contractor GL policy — carriers consider it a service. A small handful of carriers charge a flat fee ($25–$75) if you exceed a certain number of certificates per term, and a few specialty markets do charge an additional premium for ongoing-and-completed-ops AI. Your agent will tell you up front if there is a cost.

What you should not do is hand-type yourself onto a COI or alter a certificate after it is issued. That is insurance fraud, and the moment a claim hits the carrier will deny coverage and report the contractor. Always go through your agent.

What Else Contractors Should Know About Additional Insureds

A few practical realities that come up on almost every job once you start adding AIs to your policy.

Primary & Non-Contributory

Most contracts also require primary and non-contributory wording, which means your policy pays first and the GC’s policy is not tapped. This is a separate endorsement — ask for it alongside the AI.

Waiver of Subrogation

Many GCs require both AI status AND a waiver of subrogation, which stops your carrier from suing them after paying a claim. Bundle these requests together when you call.

Job-Specific vs Blanket

A blanket AI endorsement is faster and covers everyone you have a written contract with. A scheduled AI lists individual entities. Most contractors keep blanket on the policy and add scheduled AIs only for unusual or large jobs.

AI Does NOT Cover Their Mistakes

Adding a GC as an AI protects them only for liability arising from your work. It does not turn your policy into their policy — their negligence is not your problem.
