What Is the Attachment Point on a Commercial Umbrella Policy?
The attachment point is the underlying policy limit — the amount that must be exhausted before the umbrella activates. On a $1M GL policy, the umbrella’s attachment point is $1M.

What is the attachment point on an umbrella insurance policy?
Attachment point is another term for the underlying policy limit at which umbrella coverage begins. Below the attachment point, your primary policy handles the claim. At the attachment point, the umbrella steps in.
Example: $1M GL + $2M umbrella. Attachment point = $1M. Claims under $1M: handled entirely by GL. Claims between $1M–$3M: GL pays $1M, umbrella pays the excess up to $2M. Claims over $3M: you’re exposed above total available coverage.
If you drop your GL below the required underlying limit (say, from $1M to $500K), the umbrella’s attachment point doesn’t change — you’ve created a $500K gap between where GL ends and umbrella begins that you’re personally responsible for.
