The Direct Answer
Yes. Subcontractors can be named as additional insureds on a builders risk policy by endorsement. This is done when a subcontractor has an insurable interest in materials they supply that will be incorporated into the permanent structure.
For example: a plumbing contractor who supplies $85,000 of fixtures and rough-in materials has a financial stake in those materials until they’re permanently installed and accepted by the GC or owner. Being named as an additional insured on the builders risk policy means a theft or fire loss that destroys those materials produces a claim that can also protect the sub’s interest.
Not all carriers offer this endorsement, and the policy form governs how sub-specific coverage works. We confirm availability of this endorsement for every commercial project where GC clients want to provide it for their subs.
