Does tools insurance cover tools stolen from an unlocked truck?
This is one of the most policy-specific coverage questions in the tools insurance space. Some carriers explicitly exclude theft from unlocked vehicles — their position is that leaving tools in an unlocked vehicle is negligent.
Other carriers, particularly those writing open-perils coverage, do not require forced entry for theft claims — coverage applies regardless of whether the vehicle was locked.
Before assuming you’re covered: check your policy’s vehicle theft language. If your current policy requires forced entry, consider switching to a carrier with broader vehicle theft coverage — especially if your trucks are sometimes left unlocked on job sites or in neighborhoods where quick theft is a risk.
