How long do I need to keep my professional liability insurance?

Professional liability claims can surface years after project completion. A building designed in 2023 might generate a claim in 2027. Canceling your policy in 2024 — even after the project is complete — leaves you uninsured for that potential 2027 claim.

The safest approach: maintain continuous PL coverage through your entire career in professional services. When you retire or stop doing professional services work, purchase tail coverage for 3–5 years to cover claims that may emerge from past projects.

A continuous retroactive date going back to your career start date provides the broadest protection. Any gap in coverage resets your retroactive date and strips protection for work done during the gap period.
