CONTRACTOR LICENSING GUIDE
How Much Does a Contractor’s License Cost?
Licensing fees vary widely by state and classification. Here’s a realistic breakdown of what to budget.
What You’ll Actually Spend
Contractor license costs have multiple components — the application/license fee, the exam fee, the cost of study materials, insurance (required before you can apply), and a surety bond. Adding these up gives a clearer picture than just looking at the application fee.
Application/license fees: These range from $50 in states with simple registration to $500+ for high-complexity states. Florida’s initial Certified General Contractor license runs around $249 for the application plus $209 for the exam through PSI. California’s C-10 electrical license is $300 for the application plus a similar exam fee.
Exam fees: $85–$250 per exam. Some states have two exams (trade + business/law), doubling this cost. Study materials — the official code books and exam prep courses — add another $100–$400.
Insurance: You need a GL policy in place before applying. For most small contractors just starting out, a $1M/$2M GL policy runs $500–$2,000 per year depending on trade and revenue.
Surety bond: If your state requires a bond, annual bond premiums run 1–3% of the bond amount. A $10,000 bond costs $100–$300/year. A $25,000 bond: $250–$750/year.
Total first-year cost estimate: $1,500–$5,000 for most first-time contractor licensees, with insurance being the largest line item.
Related Questions
Is the licensing fee refundable if I fail the exam?
No — application fees are not refundable. Exam fees may be refunded if you reschedule within the allowed window, but not after a no-show or failed attempt.
Are there annual fees?
Renewal fees apply every 1-2 years. These are usually $100-$400. The larger ongoing cost is maintaining insurance and bond at required minimums.
Can I get a loan to cover startup licensing costs?
Some states offer small business resources. SBA microloans can cover startup costs including licensing and insurance. Check your state’s contractor licensing board for any assistance programs.
