Does commercial umbrella insurance cover pollution claims?

Pollution exclusions in umbrella policies are typically very broad — covering not just industrial pollutants but also dust, fumes, vapors, and in some forms, even residential hazards like mold and asbestos.

Contractors whose work involves hazardous materials, environmental disturbance, asbestos abatement, mold remediation, or chemical application need Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL) — a separate specialty coverage line that specifically addresses pollution claims.

Some specialty umbrella products include limited pollution coverage or can be endorsed to include it. Ask your agent specifically about pollution coverage if your work involves any environmental exposure. The default umbrella excludes it.
