What’s the Difference Between $1M, $2M, and $5M Umbrella?
The numbers represent how much additional liability protection sits above your underlying policies. More umbrella = more excess coverage for catastrophic claims and larger contract requirements.

What is the difference between $1M, $2M, and $5M umbrella coverage?
$1M umbrella: adds $1M above each underlying policy. $1M GL + $1M umbrella = $2M total GL. Suitable for small contractors, residential work, contracts requiring $2M total coverage. Annual cost: $500–$800.
$2M umbrella: adds $2M above each underlying. $1M GL + $2M umbrella = $3M total GL. Most common requirement on commercial subcontracts. Annual cost: $800–$1,500.
$5M umbrella: adds $5M above each underlying. $1M GL + $5M umbrella = $6M total GL. Required for large commercial projects, GC roles, public work. Annual cost: $1,500–$4,000. The value per dollar of protection is better at higher limits.
