Commercial Umbrella Insurance
What Triggers Commercial Umbrella Insurance?
Umbrella is triggered when a covered liability claim exhausts an underlying policy limit. The umbrella activates automatically and pays the excess up to the umbrella limit.

What triggers a commercial umbrella insurance claim?
Example trigger: a serious job site injury generates $1.8M in damages. Your $1M GL pays its full limit. That exhaustion triggers the umbrella, which pays the remaining $800K. You owe nothing out of pocket (assuming the claim is otherwise covered).
Triggers by coverage line: for GL claims — bodily injury or property damage exceeding $1M GL limit. For auto — accident damages exceeding $1M commercial auto limit. For employers liability — severe employee injury exceeding WC employers liability limit.
Notify your umbrella carrier whenever a claim appears likely to approach primary limits. Most umbrella policies have their own notice requirements — early notification is always the right move.
