Tools & Equipment Insurance

Does Tools Insurance Cover Water or Flood Damage?

Rain and accidental water damage are often covered on open-perils policies. Flood (rising water from natural causes) is typically excluded and requires separate flood insurance.

Are tools covered if damaged by water or flooding?

There’s an important distinction between water damage and flood damage. If rain comes through a broken site window and damages your tools, or a burst pipe soaks your equipment — that’s accidental water damage, typically covered on open-perils tools policies.

Flood damage — rising water from storms, overflowing rivers, storm surge — is a specifically excluded peril on most inland marine and property policies. Flood coverage requires a separate policy (through NFIP or private flood insurers).

If you work in flood-prone areas or store tools in areas at flood risk, ask your agent about adding flood coverage as a specific endorsement or purchasing a separate flood policy.
