Commercial Auto Insurance
Can I Get Commercial Auto Insurance With an SR-22 Requirement?
It’s more difficult and expensive, but possible. Some specialty carriers insure commercial vehicles for drivers with SR-22 requirements. An independent agency can shop options.
Can contractors with an SR-22 requirement get commercial auto insurance?
An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility typically required after a DUI, reckless driving conviction, or lapse in coverage. Standard commercial auto carriers may decline to insure or add a named driver exclusion for a driver with an SR-22.
Specialty carriers and non-standard markets do insure commercial vehicles for higher-risk drivers. Expect to pay significantly higher premiums — often 2–3x standard rates. Coverage is available, but you’ll pay for the elevated risk profile.
If the driver with the SR-22 is an employee rather than the business owner, the carrier may simply add a named driver exclusion rather than declining the entire policy. Work with an independent agent who can access non-standard markets.
