CONTRACTOR LICENSING GUIDE
Does a Handyman Need a Contractor’s License?
The answer depends entirely on what you do and where. Here’s how handyman licensing works.
The Handyman Gray Zone
‘Handyman’ is not a licensed trade category. Whether a handyman needs a contractor’s license depends on (1) what specific work they’re doing, (2) the project value, and (3) the state and local requirements.
Most states distinguish between maintenance and repair work (typically no license required) and construction or remodeling work (license required above certain thresholds). A handyman replacing a faucet, painting a room, or hanging a ceiling fan typically doesn’t need a contractor’s license. That same handyman building a deck, renovating a bathroom, or replacing a roof is performing work that requires a license in most licensing states.
Dollar thresholds are common: Tennessee requires licensing for projects over $25,000. Some states set the threshold at $500 or $1,000 for work that triggers licensing requirements. Below the threshold: no license required. Above it: you need to be licensed.
Warning: ‘breaking up’ a large project into smaller jobs to stay under the threshold is considered licensing fraud in most states. The total project value is what matters, not how you invoice it.
Additionally, even without a contractor license requirement, a handyman may need a business license in their city or county to legally operate.
Related Questions
What work can a handyman do without a license?
Minor repairs, maintenance, painting, basic carpentry below the dollar threshold, and other non-structural work that doesn’t require a permit — in most states. The threshold and definition of ‘minor’ vary by state.
Do handymen need insurance?
Yes — even without a license requirement, a GL policy protects you from property damage and injury claims. Many clients now require proof of insurance before hiring.
Can a handyman pull permits?
Permits typically require a licensed contractor to sign off. A handyman doing work that requires a permit but doesn’t have a license cannot legally pull that permit.
