Why True Single-Job Policies Are Rare
Workers comp policies are almost universally written on an annual basis because the claims process, EMR calculation, and state regulatory requirements are all built around the annual policy structure. A policy that terminates after one job creates open-ended claim liability that most carriers aren’t willing to take on.
Short-term coverage endorsements and special project policies exist in some non-admitted markets, but they’re expensive — often more than a standard annual policy — and limited in scope. Most contractors who pursue single-job coverage end up paying more than they would for an annual policy.
The minimum premium rule also works against single-job coverage. Most carriers have a minimum premium of $500–$1,500 regardless of how little payroll the job involves. A six-week project with $20,000 in payroll at a $4.00 rate would generate an $800 theoretical premium — which hits the minimum floor anyway.
Pay-As-You-Go as the Single-Job Solution
The practical solution for contractors who don’t consistently have workers comp is to bind an annual pay-as-you-go policy when the job starts. Premium is calculated on actual payroll each pay cycle — so if the job runs 6 weeks and then you have no workers for the rest of the year, you only pay premium for those 6 weeks plus the minimum.
When the next project comes along, the policy is already in force. There’s no gap in coverage and no re-underwriting. You’ve also started building loss history with a carrier, which matters for EMR and future premium.
We can set up a pay-as-you-go policy within a day for most contractors. If you have a job starting soon and don’t currently have coverage, call us — we’ll have you covered and certificated before work begins.
